Very few bowls of the “kohiki" type designation are large enough to be used as chalices, as here. The flat chalice form is the most common extant shape, and tea bowl‐shaped examples are extremely rare. The bamboo node like foot is strong and photographs of this bowl make it appear much larger than its actual size. The melting pattern of staining which has developed across its surface would have been an aspect of the bowl treasured by generations of its owners. Formerly in the collection of Matsunaga Jian.
