ディオニュソスあるいはマイナス

　透明な灰青色の地に、白色の顔をもつ人物のマスクが表現された方形飾板。半分の顔2枚を合わせたもの。額にヘアバンドを巻き、頭には木蔦の葉と花からなる冠をかぶっている。これらの細部は灰緑色、赤色、緑色、黄色、暗紫色で表現される。マイナスに似ているが、額にヘアバンドを着けていることからディオニュソスを表したものとも考えられる。ディオニュソスはギリシア神話の酒の神であり、各地で篤く信仰された。その祭典は演劇と結びついている。

This rectangular decorative panel show a white faced human mask set against a translucent grayish blue ground. Made from the alignment of two half faces. The forehead is wrapped in a head band and the head is topped with an ivy crown. These details are depicted in grayish green, red, green, yellow and dark purple. This face resembles that of Maenad, but the head band at the forehead could also suggest that this figure is Dionysos. Dionysos was the Greek god of wine and he was fervently worshipped throughout the Greek world. His rites were also linked to the theatre.
