Lidded Bowl with Grape Design

  • Edo period, 1711-1781
Blue-green lidded bowl with grape design, mold-blown

This lidded bowl is decorated with a raised relief pattern of grapes and vines growing heavily on an arbor. The grapes of Koshu province (present-day Yamanashi prefecture) were famous during the Edo period, and records show they were sold in Edo and enjoyed a reputation as an expensive and exotic fruit. The shape is elegant in the old style, a good example of what glass works were like in the era before glass became a common material. The rim is finished with careful polishing.
