Bizen ware has been cherished in Japan since ancient times as a simple unglazed pottery created from clay and flames. The absence of glaze makes firing the most essential component in producing Bizen ware. The marks that form naturally in the firing represent its greatest feature and most noteworthy aspect. The history of Bizen ware—from a primitive form to its limitless expressions—is a long one that continues to influence many artists today.

This exhibition brings together masterful examples of early Bizen ware that attracted practitioners of tea in the Momoyama period and modern works by renowned Japanese ceramic artists who have been drawn to these early works. The exhibition also features distinct works by Living National Treasures, who have been active in modernizing this art form, as well as young, up-and-coming artists.
