Islamic Ceramics
Egypt, excavated at Fust.a-t. site
Waseda University, Tokyo
The ceramics produced in the Islamic world reveal continuing shared influences in terms of both technique and design, while regional characteristics also began to emerge. The Islamic ceramics of Fust.a-t., over the passage of time, can be largely divided into three groups: 1) pink clay with lead glaze, 2) white compound clay with alkaline glazes, and 3) a rough reddish brown clay with lead glaze. The decorative techniques included polychrome glazed, underglaze painted, luster painted, incised, carved and attached decoration. Conversely, there also appeared purely functional wares such as monochromatic yellow-glazed wares and light green-glazed wares. With the beginning of the Fatimid dynasty there was an increased amount of East-West trade, and this lead to the import of high quality Chinese porcelains and celadons. Inspired by these imports, local Middle Eastern potters began to produce ceramics that imitated Chinese wares including white porcelain and celadon. During the Mamluk period, a type of polychrome glazed sgraffiatto pottery generally known as Mamluk pottery became the fashion. Like other material goods of this period, mass produced wares accompanied the expansion and improvement in the people's daily lives.
