Autumn Special Exhibition
September 28 - December 15
The Arts and Lore of Japanese Dining
Japan’s rich natural environment and beautiful seasonal changes have had a significant influence on the spirit of the Japanese people and on the formation of its various cultural arts. At the apex of this influence is perhaps Japan’s cuisine and dining culture. the foundation of all human life.
Known as “one soup and three dishes (ichijū sansai),” Japanese cuisine typically consists of rice as a staple, served with soup, three side dishes (a simmered dish, a grilled dish, etc.), and pickles. Throughout its long history, this art form has undergone changes with the passage of time, incorporating the distinctive colors and characteristics of Japan. This exhibition traces the delicious, beautiful foods of Japan together with its arts and crafts. It also aims to rediscover the magnificence of the Japanese dining culture cultivated by our ancestors and creates an opportunity to pass this on to the next generation.
