解説(春の玉手箱)

 美術館創立者の小山美秀子に宛てた杉本健吉の書状。正倉院展会場前の銀杏のこと、写真家・入江泰吉氏の家の前の柿のことなど、描いた対象についての近況が綴られている。手紙の向こうに色づき始めた奈良の山々が浮かぶようだ。奈良の文化人たちとの交流が偲ばれる内容である。

This letter was written by Kenkichi Sugimoto and addressed to Mrs. Koyama Mihoko, founder of the Miho Museum. The letter discusses Sugimoto's recent works, such as paintings of the gingko tree in front of the Shosoin exhibition venue and the persimmon tree in front of the house of the photographer Irie Taikichi. Reading this letter we can imagine the Nara hills, just beginning to show their autumn foliage splendor. This letter reveals the interchange that took place between Sugimoto and the cultured residents of Nara.
