双面瓶

2分割の型に、白色もしくは黄色がかった白ガラスを吹き入れて成形した瓶である。端整な顔立ちには目鼻の輪郭がくっきりと浮かび上がり、頭部両側下向きに、角がはえたような表現がある。首に紐を巻いて、顎の下に結び目を表すことから、首に蛇を巻いたメドゥーサを表す可能性もある。他の双面瓶と比べて型の形がはっきりと出た、出色の作品である。香油などを入れたものであろう。

This flask was blown from white or possibly yellowish white glass and then molded in a two-part mold. The regularly arranged faces have the eyes and nose fully in relief. The neck is wrapped with a cord whose knot can be seen beneath the chins of the faces. This face could depict Medusa with a snake wrapped around her neck. In comparison to other head flasks, this molding is clear cut and a superb work. This jar was probably used to hold perfumed oils.
