This statue, a graceful female figure with four arms, represents the bodhisattva Prajnaparamita. Prajnaparamita is a Sanskrit term meaning “perfection of wisdom.” Because buddhas are born of this feminine noun of “wisdom,” the Maha-prajnaparamita sutra sees Prajnaparamita as the Mother of All Buddhas. Especially when Esoteric Buddhism flourished, there emerged a female buddha called the Wisdom Buddha Mother. A small Amida Buddha image appears on the front of the cylindrical topknot standing on the head of this bodhisattva statue, and on the forehead of the statue is a third eye that opens in spindle shape. Usually, a statue of this type holds a sutra and a lotus flower or is posed with the hand gesture of the preaching mudra. The “Buddha mother” statue here does neither, but exhibits a gentle smile more impressive than anything else.
